American White Shepherd is a keen and courageous dog descending from German Shepherd dogs. The dog breed is registered independently with the American White Shepherd Association that was founded in 1994. These dogs originated from USA, Canada and Europe.

These herding dogs have strong protective instincts and are also used as police dogs. Certain other names for this dog breed are White German Shepherd, White Shepherd Dog, Berger Blanc Suisse and American-Canadian White Shepherd. Some kennel clubs consider these dogs as white colored German Shepherd dogs and regard the white color as a disqualifying fault.
Being the direct descendants of German Shepherd dog, these White Shepherds are quite similar to them. However, they are not albinos. They have dark eyes and black eyelids. Lips and nose are also black in color. Nose color tends to lighten during winters. Skin pigmentation is black, grey or blue. The tail is set low and carried with a slight curve. These well balanced and medium sized dogs are slightly longer than tall.

Color: As the name itself indicates, these dogs are primarily pure white in color.
Height: The average height of these dogs is 24 to 26 inches. The females are generally a bit shorter, that is, 22 to 24 inches in height.
Weight: The ideal weight for this White Shepherd breed ranges between 77 to 85 pounds.
These dogs are vulnerable to Hip Dysplasia, Elbow Dysplasia and other degenerative joint diseases. They are also susceptible to malabsorption syndrome, megaesophagus, bloating, allergies, eye problems, coat problems and other common dog diseases. Some dogs may be prone to autoimmune diseases like Lupus and Congenital Spinal Disease as well but this is quite rare.

The long, stiff and constant shedding hair coat of these dogs needs to be brushed on a daily basis to remove loose hair and control shedding. The coat requires more care during seasonal heavy shedding.
Other grooming activities include regularly clipping the toenails, trimming the hair between paw pads, checking and cleaning eyes and ears to avoid infections and so on. Bathe your beloved doggy only when necessary so as to retain natural oils present on skin providing weather resistant texture.

These dogs love to spend time with their owners and family and suffer from separation anxiety when left alone for longer duration. They are usually wary of strangers and tend to bark only when necessary.
These smart and trainable dogs have good learning abilities. They need to be trained and socialized right from the beginning to avoid aggressive behavior. They are calm and friendly with kids and get along well with other pets in the house, especially when properly introduced. They are best matched with dedicated and experienced dog owners capable of handling these dogs assertively.

These adventurous dogs thoroughly enjoy engaging in vigorous activities and obedience training. They love running, playing fetch and other interactive games with the family. Nonetheless, the ritual of long daily brisk walks or jogs should not be neglected. Lack of adequate physical and mental stimulation can give rise to behavioral problems in these dogs.
They are relatively inactive indoors and do well in apartment situation with at least a large sized yard. Apart from herding, guarding and police work, American White Shepherd dogs are also used for agility, ring sports, search and rescue services, sniffing out drugs, underground mines, gas leaks etc and also as wonderful guide dogs for blind individuals.
