Bichon Frise Dog Breed Origin and Other Names
This dog breed is believed to have originated in the Mediterranean area and descended from the Barbet or Water Spaniels. The breed was known as Barbichon in earlier times, which was later reduced to Bichon for simplicity.
During the reign of Henry III, the popularity of these dogs increased in France as the King used to pamper his dog a lot and even carried him everywhere. Later, these dogs became famous in circuses and fairs. But, nowadays these non sporting dogs are used as pet dogs and show dogs.
Physical Appearance
Though small in size, still Bichon Frise dogs are sturdy enough. They have expressive round eyes that are usually black or dark brown in color. They should not be too large or obliquely set. The dark brown or black colored skin around the eyes is referred to as a halo and tends to heighten the overall appearance of the eyes. In the absence of halos, the eyes seem to bear a blank expression instead of the usual inquisitive one.
Their tails are adorably plumed and carried cheerfully over the back. Their drooping ears are generally covered with long hair. The hair coat can be trimmed from time to time to bring out the natural body frame. On an average, the height of these dogs should range between 9.5 to 11.5 inches.
Color: These dogs have white hair coats, at time, with slight shadings of cream, buff or apricot colors.

These dog breeds are susceptible to health issues like immune-mediated thrombocytopenia, autoimmune hemolytic anemia, urinary stones, osteoarthritis, dislocation of kneecaps, epilepsy, allergies and other skin ailments. They are prone to eye problems like cataracts and watery eyes, blocked tear ducts etc. Lack of proper dental care may lead to periodontal issues and even tooth loss.

Bichon Frise Dog Breed Grooming Requirements
This dog breed is characterized by a double coat consisting of a dense, silky undercoat and a curly and coarse outer coat. The long and puffy hair coat should be brushed on a daily basis to keep it free from mats. They are not prone to shedding. Plus, these hypo allergic dogs are free of doggy odor.
These cuddly dogs should be bathed at least once in a month’s time. The hair around their eyes and ears should be trimmed regularly. In addition, the eyes, ears and teeth need to be cleaned on a regular basis. In case of professional grooming, it should be carried out every three to four weeks.
Bichon Frise Temperament
These charming dogs are gentle, well mannered, playful, friendly, outgoing, bold, obedient, intelligent, jovial, loving and sensitive in temperament. Due to this easy going temperament, these dogs generally adapt quite easily to new surroundings and owners.
