Boston Terrier Dog Breed Origin And Other Names
The breed is supposed to have originated in the United States (Boston) by the cross breeding of English Bulldog and white English Terrier. These dog breeds are classified as non sporting dogs. They were originally bred for fighting but gradually gained popularity as excellent companion dogs. This breed of dogs is considered as a good combination of strength, balance and a pleasant personality.
These well balanced, sturdy dogs have a compact built. Their bones and muscles are proportionate to their overall weight and structure. The square head is short and so is the tail. The short face with large protruding eyes usually bears an intelligent expression. The eyes should be dark in color. The blue ones are generally rejected. They have small and erect ears.
Color: The AKC recognizes brindle, black, or seal colored Boston Terriers with white markings. Solid colors without white markings are considered a disqualification. Brown, liver, red cream or white colored breeds are quite rare and not recognized by AKC. The brindle color is generally preferred over other colors.
Height: Both male as well as female generally grow to about 15 to 17 inches in height.
Weight: The weight is divided into 3 classes, that is, under 15 pounds, 15-20 pounds, and 20-25 pounds. On an average, the ideal weight should remain between 10 to 25 pounds.
Boston Terrier Health Problems
The short muzzle of your Boston Terrier is cute to look at but it causes breathing troubles like snoring and drooling in the dog. They are sensitive to temperature extremities and hence should never be exposed to such conditions. Their large and bulging eyes are susceptible to injuries. Juvinile Cataract is a serious genetic disorder occurring in such dogs.
They are also prone to glaucoma, hypothyroidism, bone defects, heart diseases, allergies, tumors etc. These dogs have a sensitive digestive system and are prone to gas problems, especially when fed table scraps. The birthing process generally involves Caesarean procedure because the puppies have large heads.
Life Expectancy: The average life expectancy is 13 to 15 years. Although, it is not uncommon to find a Boston Terrier that is more than 15 years old.
Litter Size: The average litter size is around 3 to 4 puppies.
Boston Terrier Grooming Requirements
Grooming is quite an easy task as the breed is characterized by short and smooth fine textured coat. The brushing and combing can be done on a weekly basis to keep the coat in perfectly glossy condition. They do not shed much and are not too messy.
Plus, a mere rub down with a wet towel is all that is needed on a daily basis to keep them clean. These dogs are relatively clean with less doggy odor. So, they can be bathed only when necessary. Though, their eyes and ears require regular cleaning. Nail trimming should also be done on a regular basis to avoid unnecessary nail growth.

But, there are positive points too. Boston Terrier dogs do fairly well in houses and apartments, with or without yards. Novice dog owners can safely go for this breed of dogs.
