Samoyed dog breed is an ancient dog breed originating in Northwest Russia and Western Siberia. The name Samoyed is derived from the “nomadic Samoyed tribe of Siberia”. These dogs were originally used for herding, sledding, guarding reindeer, hunting bears etc.
The gentle and lovely Samoyed dogs love to play with children. These delightful dogs are highly devoted to their owners and hence require an equally caring and dedicated attitude in return.Though, the high pitched barking of a Samoyed can be a bit of a headache.
These beautiful dogs are medium in size and muscular in build. They have dark, deep eyes, almond shaped eyes that are usually set wide apart. The erect ears are triangular in shape and slightly rounded near the tips.
The nose can be black, brown or liver colored, although the nose color may change according to the weather or with age. Their black lips tend to curl a bit at the corner thereby giving the impression of a hearty smile. The bushy tail is usually moderate in length and curled upwards.
Color: Samoyed dog breed is characterized by a rich, all white hair coat. It can also be white and biscuit, all biscuit or cream.
Height: On an average, these dogs grow to about 21 to 23.5 inches in height. Female Samoyeds are a bit shorter, that is, around 19 to 21 inches.
Weight: The ideal weight for male Samoyeds ranges from 45 to 65 pounds. The females, on the other hand, should weigh around 35 to 50 pounds.
Samoyed Dog Heath Problems
This breed is prone to health problems like Bloating, Hip Dysplasia, Progressive Retinal Atrophy, Hypothyroidism, Bleeding Disorders, Allergies, Skin Problems and other such issues.
Kidney diseases Samoyed Hereditary Glomerulopathy and renal failure are also quite common in these dogs. Otherwise, The breed is usually considered as a relatively healthy breed of dogs.
Life Expectancy: Samoyed breed dogs usually live up to 12-15 years.
Litter Size: The average litter size of this breed is 5 to 9 puppies.
Samoyed Dog Grooming Requirements
The thick and long hair coat of Samoyed dog breed requires a good amount of brushing and combing, several times in a week so as to maintain it in its perfect condition. The double coat consists of a short, soft and wooly undercoat and a comparatively long and harsh outercoat.
The hair coat requires extensive daily grooming, particular during the summer seasons when they shed heavily. They should be bathed only when necessary, perhaps once or twice in a year’s times. Interestingly, the typical Samoyed hair coat usually remains white even without grooming. Though, dry shampooing can be done from time to time.
Samoyed Dog Breed Temperament
They are cheerful, playful, alert, easy going, adaptable, responsive, friendly and faithful. However, due to this friendly and trusting disposition, Samoyed dogs are not entrusted with guard dog duties. Nonetheless, their high pitched barking can be used constructively for watchdog duties.
These dogs generally do not get along well with smaller pets but they have been found to be friendly with cats. Training them can be quite a challenging task owing to the dog’s stubborn streaks of behavior. Still, these dogs are so sweet that they are rarely aggressive.

These intelligent and highly energetic dogs require a good amount of physical as well as mental stimulation, or else there are likely to become destructive due to boredom. Therefore, in apartment situation, they should be given access to at least a small sized yard in order to fulfill their activity needs.
