Tibetan Terrier dog breeds are medium sized, non sporting dog breeds. They are usually friendly, affectionate and tend to bond particularly well with one specific member of the family. It is interesting to note that even though the breed is named Tibetan Terrier, still it is not a terrier breed.
Origin
The breed originated in the Lost Valley of Tibet and is also known as Tsang Apso or Holy Dog of Tibet. Earlier, these psychic dogs were owned only by Tibetan Monks, mostly as companion dogs. They were considered lucky and hence never sold but only gifted to special people or the ones who were about to go for dangerous journeys.
Physical Appearance
Tibetan Terrier dog breed is characterized by a powerful and sturdy build accompanied by a cheerful yet inquisitive expression. The large eyes are dark brown in color and set wide apart.
The pendant ears are V-shaped and tend to hang beside the head. The eyes and foreface are usually covered by hair. The high set tail is well feathered and curled up over the back.
Color: The hair coat comes in a variety of colors and patterns such as black, white, cream, sable and so on.
Height: Both male as well as female are generally 14 to 17 inches in height.
Weight: The average healthy weight of Tibetan Terrier dog breed ranges between 18 to 30 pounds.
Tibetan Terrier Health Problems
Some common health problems in Tibetan Terrier dog breed are Hip Dysplasia, Patellar Luxation, Hypothyroidism, Lens Luxation, Cataract, Progressive Retinal Atrophy and other skin and eye related dog diseases. They are particularly susceptible to flea allergies.
Life Expectancy: The average life span of Tibetan Terrier breed dogs is about 12 to 15 years.
Litter Size: The average litter size of this dog breed is 5 to 8 puppies.
Tibetan Terrier Dog Grooming Requirements
The profuse double coat of a Tibetan Terrier requires a great deal of grooming. The double coat consists of long and straight/wavy outer coat and soft, dense, woolly under coat. Therefore, the hair coat needs to be brushed and combed at least two to three times per week to remove loose hair.
While combing, make sure that the coat is neither too dry nor too wet. This helps in preventing unnecessary breakage of hair. The hair coat can be clipped during the summer season in case the dog is not being used for show purposes.
These dogs are considered as moderate to low shedders. Bathe your dog on a weekly or bi weekly basis. Plus, remove the hair between paw pads from time to time and keep them clean. Clean the dog’s eyes and ears on a regular basis to help avoid infections.
Tibetan Terrier Dog Breed Temperament
These dogs are gentle, intelligent, sensitive, friendly, cheerful, playful and loyal in temperament. They generally adapt themselves according to their owners, that is, they are active with active owners and calm with the ones who prefer a sedentary lifestyle.
The highly devoted Tibetan Terrier dogs only demand loving and dedicated dog owners. These smart dogs are easy to train as they tend to learn quickly. However, they can be stubborn and independent at times.
Therefore, they require tactful but not harsh training approach. Plus, they need to be socialized right from puppyhood in order to avoid reserved and timid behavior. They are generally good with children but do not tolerate mistreatment. Thus, they are more suitable for older children. They get along well with other pets in the house but can be bossy.
Dog Breed Pros and Cons
The Tibetan Terrier dogs are suitable for experienced as well as first time dog owners. They are relatively inactive indoors and suitable for apartment situation, preferably with access to properly fenced small sized yard.
As for exercise, they enjoy the ritual of long daily walks, runs and interactive play sessions. If not exercised adequately, they may engage in their favorite pastimes like jumping and digging holes in the garden.
Besides, these dogs can withstand extremely cold climates and hence can be kept outside for sometime but not long enough as they like to spend time with their owners too. Tibetan Terrier dogs are generally aloof of strangers and make for excellent watchdogs.
